Description
Unusually for a thistle, this is a spineless plant. It bears bright purple pom-pom flowers on woolly stems with leaves that are soft and white-felted. Flowering in July and August, it looks wonderful in meadows and natural plantings, but quite special in a vase also. The plant gets its common name from the belief that it could cure sadness – Nicolas Culpepper (the famous 17th Century botanist) said that “it makes a man as merry as a cricket” – sounds good to us, though we couldn’t make any promises!
