A small, thornless tree that produces tiny, white, star-shaped flowers in spring and is ideal for growing in wet soils.
Growth and size
Mature height: 6m.
Growth rate: 30cm per year.
Supplied as 20-50cm cell-grown saplings.
Can be planted all year round with proper care.
Value to wildlife
Main food plant of the brimstone butterfly.
Valuable source of nectar and pollen for bees.
Fruit is eaten by birds, particularly thrushes.
Soil and conditions
Grows best in wet soils and open woods.
Thrives in scrub, hedgerows, wet heathland, riverbanks and bogs.
Prefers acidic soils, but can grow on neutral soils.
