Opuntia zebrina f. reticulata (dillenii f. reticulata)

Description

Also known as the Cobra Cactus, the Opuntia zebrina f. reticulata is an Opuntia quite unlike you’ve ever seen. Its unusual and intriguing markings criss cross throughout the plant, creating a distinctive snakeskin-like pattern. These markings are the result of scarring due to each pad’s expanding growth. Its tall, irregular pads feel as if they have slithered up from the soil, further adding to it’s snake-like characteristics.

WATERING

Water thoroughly and regularly when soil is 100% dry during the spring/summer months. Refrain from watering during the winter months.

LIGHT REQUIREMENTS

Full sun.

FEED

Use a cactus fertiliser 3 times between March – November.

REPOTTING

This species can live in the same pot for several years. Repotting may only be necessary once every 2-3 years (or longer), once roots begin to protrude out of the drainage holes. Use a well draining cactus compost, adding extra drainage medium such as perlite, pumice or grit.
