Chaenomeles ‘Crimson & Gold’, more popularly known as the Flowering Quince or Japanese Quince, is a fast growing and compact multi-stemmed deciduous shrub. It is an excellent flowering shrub that blooms profusely with bright red flowers from March to May. It is an early blooming plant that will make your garden look perky, when the flora around will be dormant and asleep.

Chaenomeles Flowering Quince produces flowers in abundance, covering the entire shrub from top to bottom. It does not require planting of other facer plants to cover its legs. Its cup-shaped crimson red flowers with golden yellow anthers in the centre, simply look amazing. The thorny entangled branches of Japanese Quince are decorated with glossy obovate leaves, with hints of red as they emerge in spring and turn dark green as they mature.

Flowers of Japanese Quince are followed by small fragrant green yellow fruits that ripen in early autumn, used for preserves and making jellies. This wonderful garden plant will thrive in full sunlight, planted in a well-drained soil. It is a very hardy variety and is adaptable to dry conditions. It will thrive in inner cities with urban pollution, thus ideal for city gardens and balconies.

Japanese Quince do require regular care and maintenance. Their fruits drop in the lawn and occasionally need clean up. Prune them to keep their shape and size but only after the flowering period.
