Description
A compact and slow growing variety of evergreen fern, the Polystichum rigens or ‘Rigid Holly Fern’ is an interesting plant with a mound-forming habit and arching, triangular, bipinnate, mid-green frond with a rough, slightly leathery texture and stiff, pointed tips which sometimes fade in colour slightly under the sun. An easy to grow plant that is suitable for pot or patio growing or as part of small rockery displays. Also works well as a woodland groundcover at the base of trees.
Plant in moist, well-drained soils and keep in full or partial sunlight. Best growth in slightly acidic soils. May act more like an herbaceous perennial in regions with harsher Winters, causing dieback. The plant will regrow the following Spring.
