It is a very hardy perennial shrub which is deciduous and as such, will loose its leaves at the end of every season. It is recommended to divide the plant in the spring time in order to limit growth.
Late-spring is the time of flowering. Large white bracts, a form of protective leaf will form on a spike at the base of the blossoms which are small, yellow-coloured flowers. The flowers also present a pleasant odor reminiscent of oranges.
One of the most attractive features about the “Flame” heart is the changing of the colors through the seasons. Along with the flowering in the spring, the yellows, pinkish reds and dark-greens will turn more vibrant and lose some of the green notes, which will then return in autumn as the plant becomes more evenly green throughout.
The Houttuynia cordata species prefer moisture-retaining and fertile soils. In wetter areas, it will need mulching in winter.
The “Flame” is a vibrant addition to any garden setting and is used well in border areas and edging. Other benefits include low-maintenance and can be potted to adapt in different arrangements or accents.
