“Black Beauty” is a deciduous elder shrub with striking dark-purple leaves. In contrast with this deep purple, in the very late spring and early summer months, bundles of lemon-scented, pink flowers burst onto the scene. Later, the flowers are followed by dark purple-coloured berries. These berries can be used to make Elderberry wine and jam. Leaving them on the plant will attract birds and other small animals.
Compound pinnate leaves attach to central stems and provide the deep purple color throughout the growing season. Older stems will turn into a more greyish-brown colour.
Although the plant is relatively maintenance-free as far as day-to-day care is concerned, it is important to note that the plant should receive annual pruning maintenance. In addition, to maintain a more orderly plant, removing old and excessive growth can help to ensure the plants enduring vibrancy.
It is best to put the plant in full sunlight, as this will allow the leaves to reach their deepest colors.
Enjoy the Sambucus Nigra Black Beauty and its amazing contrast of deep-purple leaves with pink flowers in the early summer.
