Elaeagnus can be deciduous or evergreen shrubs or small trees, with simple, often silvery-scaled leaves, and small fragrant tubular flowers borne in clusters in the leaf axils, and followed by small juicy fruit
‘Maculata’ is one of the best-known variegated varieties, which accommodates most soils, apart from chalk. Its variegated yellow and dark green foliage adds colour to the borders all the year round and bears small, scented, white flowers in autumn. It can also be used as a hedge and the leaves are often used in floral arrangements.
