Opuntia robusta

Description

Native to Mexico, Opuntia robusta is a succulent shrub which can grow somewhat tree-like over time, with a distinct thick woody trunk and many branches. Lik other species of Opuntia, its pale green segments grow fleshy and flat. Short sharp bristles grow in tufts from the areoles, with occasional spines.

WATERING

Water thoroughly and regularly when soil is 100% dry during the spring/summer months. Refrain from watering during the winter months.

Use a cactus fertiliser 3 times between March – November.

REPOTTING

This species can live in the same pot for several years. Repotting may only be necessary once every 2-3 years (or longer), once roots begin to protrude out of the drainage holes. Use a well draining cactus compost, adding extra drainage medium such as perlite, pumice or grit.
