Passiflora are mostly tender tendril-climbing shrubs, with simple or palmately-lobed, generally evergreen leaves and showy flowers of distinctive structure with often colourful coronal filaments, followed by conspicuous fruits, edible in some species
‘White Lightning’ has large white 10-petalled sun shaped flowers with a prominent stamen against a pale green eye, with purple filaments. An evergreen ornamental climber that also boasts a delicate fragrance. Glossy, deeply cut foliage that also has a star-shape. A hybrid between P. caerulea and ‘Constance Elliott’ it has a form similar to the species, but with the white of P.’Constance Elliott’. Prefers full sun but tolerates semi-shade, and may need support to begin its climbing adventures. A hardy shrub, but may need some protection from harsh winds and frosts, otherwise grow as a conservatory plant. Orange egg-shaped fruit are borne in the autumn, which are edible, but none to tasty. Other parts of the plant are toxic.
