Description
Start the seeds indoors from March-April.
Cold stratify the seeds for 5-7 days in a refrigerator before sowing.
Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist, well-drained seed compost and lightly cover.
Provide temperature fluctuation to aid germination, around 26c during the day and 18c at night.
Seeds will usually germinate within 10-21 days.
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots.
Grow on in bright light, keeping the compost just moist.
Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out.
Wait to plant out until the weather and soil have warmed.
Space plants about 30-45 cm apart to allow room for growth.
Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.
Deadhead spent flowers if desired, although plants may self-seed freely for the following season.
