Description

Superb, hardy, fast growing, deciduous tree with broad spreading head. Magnificent leaves, 20cm (8ins) long and 15cm (6ins) across with slender toothed lobes which end with a bristle-like point, open pale yellow, turning green in summer with paler underside, then brilliant colours in autumn from orange to dark red. Clusters of catkins of yellow male flowers and tiny female flowers in spring followed by large acorns, which sit in very shallow cups and take 2 years to mature. Any ordinary well drained soil and needs an open sunny position to develop a good shape. Excellent tree for nesting birds.
