A bushy plant with long, narrow, dark green leaves that are glossy on top and have silvery, felt-like hairs underneath.

Growth and size
Mature height: 6m.
Growth rate: 100cm per year.
Supplied as 20-50cm cell-grown saplings.
Can be planted all year round with proper care.

Value to wildlife
Food plant of a number of moth species, including the lackey, herald, and red-tipped clearwing.
Catkins are an important early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other insects.
Branches make good nesting and roosting sites for birds.

Soil and conditions
Often found in wet ground, such as by riversides.
Doesn’t grow well in alkaline soils.
Prefers full sunlight.
