Description
Ilex Auquifolium Handsworth New Silver is a dense, evergreen silver variegated shrub with purple young shoots and spiny, mid-green leaves bearing creamy margins. This large, dashing holly makes an excellent hedge or specimen shrub to add structure and privacy to your garden. White, small flowers appear in Spring followed by brightly coloured organge-red winter berries which will stand out in startling contrast to its glossy, green foliage. Holly branches are often cut to add to Christmas decorations but remember that if you want the Ilex to show berries, to plant a male and female partner together.
Ideally this holly prefers full sun but will thrive nearly as well in part sun. Although it tolerates a wide range of environments and soil types, it prefers well drained, loamy soils. It is quite slow growing but will get quite large if left unpruned so prune it quite hard if you prefer them bushier.
