A fast-growing native tree common in north-west Scotland and known for the way its leaves flutter and shimmer in the breeze.
Growth and size
Mature height: 20m.
Growth rate: 70-80cm per year.
Supplied as 20-50cm cell-grown saplings.
Can be planted all year round with proper care.
Value to wildlife
Attracts many insects, which are prey for birds and ladybirds.
Deadwood is eaten by the aspen hoverfly, and provides habitat for birds including woodpeckers.
A favourite tree of beavers.

Flourishes in open sunlight and moist soil.
Intolerant of shade.
