Description
Berberis thunbergii, also known as the Japanese Barberry, is a low-growing, deciduous shrub with a spreading habit. It is well known for being a dense, prickly shrub that is suitable for hedge planting, especially popular for security hedge planting. The small oval leaves turn orange and red in autumn before falling off. The Berberis produces yellow flowers in spring followed by red fruit in autumn.
Plant the Barberry in any type of soil and it is suitable for planting inland as well as in coastal areas. Berberis grows at around 1-2 feet per year but can be pruned to a manageable size.
