Description
A bushy plant with strong, upright stems which provide a structured shaped and add height to border displays. The Cynara cardunculus, also known as Cardoon or Globe Artichoke, is a tall herbaceous perennial with silver-green foliage consisting of spined leaves and tall, rigid stems which carry large, rounded buds similar to artichokes which open to thistle-like, honey-scented blooms. The flowers are a beautiful purple and last from late Summer and throughout the Autumn, with the faded flowers also providing some Winter interest.
Plant in fertile, well-drained soils and keep in full sun in a sheltered position. Protect from strong winds. Mulching is recommended during harsh Winters to protect from frosts. Tolerates poor soils and drought conditions.
