The cider gum tree is a winner of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Merit for its value, beauty and hardiness. The name of “cider gum” comes the collection of sap and later fermentation, which results in a cider-like flavor.
This fast-growing evergreen tree can be pruned in order to maintain a more “bush-like” appearance. It is a flowering tree, which produces small white flowers during the midsummer.
This variety of tree tolerates colder temperatures and can handle up to -15⁰ C. It does well with a variety of soils and moisture levels, but does not like extremely wet conditions, like poorly draining soils or low-lying areas where water collects. As well, it prefers to be in a sheltered area.
The elongated, oval-shaped leaves are thick and have a two-tone color note of grey and green. This adds to the plant’s more decorative features when pruned for an appealing bush-like appearance.
