Gaultheria Mulberry Wine

Description

A more compact variety of Gaultheria with dense thickets of upright stems carrying small, sharp-spined, dark green leaves throughout the year. Loose clusters of small, nodding, white flowers appear throughout Summer and are followed by magenta-purple berries in Autumn which deepen in colour with age. The berries are more likely to fruit when the plant is near a male pollinator variety. This evergreen shrub grows via a suckering habit, making it easy to spread and maintain as well as being quite hardy and resilient in colder regions.

Plant in moist, well-drained, neutral to acidic soils and keep in partially or fully shaded positions. Tolerant of full sun if soil moisture is maintained. Male pollinator varieties increase likelihood of fruit. Fruit can cause indigestion and an upset stomach and is not recommended for human consumption.
