Hosta, Blue Mouse Ears

Description

This Hosta has been described as a dainty charmer, and quite rightly as it forms a perfectly symmetrical mound of shell-shaped blue to grey-green almost rubbery leaves which really do resemble mouse ears. Its unusual attractive foliage is also delicately marked with lighter coloured veins radiating out from the central vein, and as the foliage is remarkably tough it is pretty resistant to slugs and rabbits. In mid-summer the flower heads appear just above and sometimes nestled in the foliage and before they flower the buds swell like balloons before opening to bell-shaped pale lilac-mauve flowers. It has been said that this Hosta deserves the prize for the perfectly named Hosta! Due to its size it is ideal for the rock garden, front of borders or containers as long as it is in light to full shade. As with all Hostas they will go completely dormant in winter so the withered foliage will need tidying away before spring time. Give a good feed and mulch well to get lusher leaves.
