Leycesteria are deciduous shrubs with hollow stems, simple leaves and terminal and axillary racemes of tubular flowers, followed by fleshy berries
This shrub is often planted as cover for game birds who love its berries, hence the name ‘Pheasant Berry’. This variety has golden foliage that starts as soft yellow and becomes lighter. It has a long season of interest. Heart-shaped leaves emerge in spring from the bright green winter stems. Its white flowers bloom in July and August;on burgundy coloured bracts (with white inside) over red-purple berries. The plant tolerates most soils, is happy at the woodland edge as well as in sun and may be cut back hard.
