Description
A medium-sized, upright tree with long lasting autumn colours. The Liquidambar ‘Palo Alto’, sometime known as the Sweet Gum tree, has very distinctive bark with a fissured, corky appearance and carries maple-like leaves which grow densely in a pyramidal habit when the tree is young, gaining a broader, more rounded shape as it ages. The foliage is a light green when fresh in the Spring and Summer and gains rich hues of red, orange and purple that last well into the Autumn months. In the Spring, small, insignificant yellow flowers appear among the foliage which are followed by spiky seed pods in the Summer.
Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil and keep in full or partial sun. Prefers full sun where it will usually gain the best Autumn leaf colour. Somewhat tolerant of short periods of drought and wet once established.
