Description
If the name ‘Star Wars’ intrigues you, it comes from the large flowers on the tree that point in a range of different directions towards the stars! This fairly new variety is a campbellii x liliiflora cross, introduced by Blumhardt of New Zealand and is a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
‘Star Wars’ magnolia offers a fantastic floral display from March to May. The flowers are huge, tulip-shaped, with a satin-finish. They carry a pale pink hue flushed with a shade of deep pink, perfect to add a wow-factor to any garden. The flowers appear before the leaves, standing out on the bare branches and you are sure to be reaching for your camera to take a selfie with these glorious blooms. In summer, they flowers are contrasted by glossy oblong green leaves.
Magnolia Star Wars grows to a height of around 4m and a spread of around 3m with a bushy habit. Plant your tree in full sun or partial shade. It is fully hardy and is frost hardy down to -15°C. It enjoys moist, well-drained soil. Avoid chalky areas.
If your garden does not have a magnolia type tree, the ‘Star Wars’ magnolia is a perfect choice to add colour and interest. Plant one where you can see it from your indoor living space. It also makes a great addition to a garden picnic area or a hide-away with a reading bench and bubbling water feature.
