Description
Mahonia aquifolium, commonly known as Oregon Grape, is a low-growing evergreen shrub, that is highly attractive to birds and pollinating insects when in bloom. This plant produces a dome-shape of glossy, spiny dark-green leaves that turn a faint purple colour over Winter. In spring, the plant produces dense clusters of yellow flowers, followed by an abundance of purple-black berries in Summer.
Plant this shrub in moist, well-drained soil. This plant is not fussy about soil type. Mahonia aquifoliums thrive in positions of partial to full shade, that are sheltered from frosts or cold winds. This plant is well suited to a woodland garden or as groundcover under mature trees.
