Description
Malus ‘Butterball’ is a variety of Crab Apple tree with such heavy yield that the branches will droop from the weight of the fruit. In Spring, grey-green foliage appears along the spreading branches followed by pink-tinged white flowers which make for great pollinators due to their long bloom period. In the Autumn cascades of small yellow-orange fruits flushed with red will appear among the foliage. Crab Apples are an ideal choice for jam making but can be eaten fresh though they tend to be quite sour.
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and keep in full sun. Susceptible to salty coastal air. Self-fertile, requiring no other trees nearby to produce fruit though cross pollination yields the best results.
