Description
An exquisite perennial that produces an upright rosette of large, broad, slightly keeled leaves from a large, underground bulb. The solitary inflorescence grows to about 1 m tall and holds countless, star-shaped, scented, blue flowers. Merwilla plumbea is native to southern Africa where it is found in a variety of usually moister habitats. In cultivation it adapts well to most warm temperate climates. Seeds germinate quickly but seedlings resent disturbance. In habitat, Merwilla is increasingly threatened by large scale collection of the bulbs for traditional medicine.
