Description

A curious-looking, but wonderfully wholesome plant, the bergamot produces whorls of hooded flowers with distinctive bracts that are carried up straight stems. In the case of Monarda ‘Schneewittchen’, the flowers are of the purest of whites, and stand out brilliantly from the deep green foliage (which releases an intense and appealing scent when brushed). Reaching 90cm or so in height, Monarda ‘Schneewittchen’ is a plant loved by bees and other pollinators—one of its common names in bee balm.

A clump-forming hardy perennial, Monarda ‘Schneewittchen’ dies back in late autumn and re-emerges in spring. Flowers keep coming from June for around four months. Deadheading will help to prolong the flowering season. Ideal for borders or patio pots in full sun or part shade, the funky-looking flowers will create a talking point with visitors! Incidentally, Monarda also makes and excellent cut flower. This bergamot plant is also known by the names Monarda ‘Snow White’ and Monarda ‘Snow Maiden’.
