Sow outdoors March to August to dig in the same year, or sow in August to September to overwinter and dig in the following year. Thinly broadcast the seed over finely prepared soil which has already been in, after 40-50 days in summer, or anytime just before flowering and 2-3 weeks before the ground is required. Cut the plants back and allow the foliage to wilt before digging in to a depth of 15-20cm. Chop up the foliage with the spade as you dig. Over wintered crops will die off with the frost, forming beneficial, protective mulch. Dig into the soil in spring. Ensure plants are cut back or dug in before they set be mown before flowering to extend the cover period. Leave plants in the ground until soil is required for use but do not let them set seed.
