Description
Osmunda regalis ‘Purpurascens’ (Royal Fern) is a tall, deciduous, hardy fern. Fronds first appear as a red-purple colour, mature to a bright green in summer and turn a golden orange in autumn, before dying back. Sometimes named the Flowering Fern, it produces its spores in the form of a brown flower, that appears through the tips of the fronds. This plant would be a wonderful addition to a shady border or bed, woodland area or as part of a water garden on the edge of a stream or pond.
Plant in a moist, acidic soil. Do not allow the soil to dry partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler areas.
