Pennyroyal – Mentha Pulegium

This is a statuesque plant with rosettes of felty-grey leaves at ground level and very tall spires of densely crowded, single yellow flowers. The whole plant is covered with soft white wool. It is a good plant for the back of borders or as a striking feature. It flowers from June-August, and reaches the height of between 30cm-200cm.

Sow outside in April by sowing the seed on the surface of a well prepared seed bed and covering lightly with fine soil. Keep the soil moist until germination takes place. Site in semi shade. Harvest the leaves at any time and for drying, just before flowering. Store in an airtight jar in a cool and dark store. Use Pennyroyal to add a strong peppermint flavour to food. It is very strong so should be used sparingly.
