Description

The Platycerium bifurcatum is an intriguing epiphytic fern which comprises of two types of fronds. At the base of the plant sit the sterile fronds that lay horizontal with a slight curve. As new growth, they emerge a light green but turn brown as they mature. The plant gets its nutrients from fallen leaves and other organic matter that have got caught under the frond’s curve. Then, growing up from the base of the plant, are the fertile fronds which are deeply lobed and antler-like, earning the plant it’s common name ‘The Staghorn Fern’. These fronds can sometimes grow up to a metre in length, making it an absolute showstopper when grown indoors.
