Betony (Stachys officinalis)

Description

Sow the seeds directly outdoors from October-February to allow natural stratification.

Alternatively, sow indoors between March-September.

Sow thinly on the surface of the soil and lightly cover with a fine layer of compost or grit.

For indoor sowing, place in a fridge at 4c for 2-3 weeks before returning to warmth to aid germination.

Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to 30-40 cm apart to allow space for growth.

Alternatively, plant out after the risk of frost has passed into their final flowering position.

Water regularly during dry spells until established, but avoid waterlogging.

Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming.

Cut back old foliage in early spring to maintain tidy clumps and promote fresh growth.
