A tree often found in wet woodland and known for its beautiful, almond-scented flowers.
Growth and size
Mature height: up to 25m.
Growth rate: 20-40cm per year.
Supplied as 20-50cm cell-grown saplings.
Can be planted all year round with proper care.
Value to wildlife
Early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other insects.
Cherries eaten by birds, including thrushes, as well as mammals such as badgers, mice and dormice.
Leaves eaten by moth caterpillars, including orchard ermine, brimstone and short-cloaked.
Toxic to livestock, particularly goats.
Soil and conditions
Prefers damp soil, such as those beside streams and rivers, particularly in upland regions.
Will grow in sunny spots.
