Description
Cordyline Torbay Red is a striking plant that retains its unusual bronze red colour throughout the year and is well suited to almost any style of garden. Native to New Zealand, this plant has a somewhat exotic appearance and can be used to brighten up borders or create a feature on patios, decking and gravelled outdoor areas.
Year round colour and interest is provided by the long slim leaves that arch out and produce an overall shape similar to a fountain. Tall erect panicles of creamy coloured white flowers bloom during the summer months and berries appear in autumn. The pleasing scent and the small fruits make this plant popular with bees and other pollinators as well as small birds, who will feed from the berries.
Commonly known as ‘Cabbage Palm’, this shrub doesn’t require much TLC to do well and is suited to beginners as well as those already with green thumbs. No pruning is needed but you will probably want to remove dead or damaged leaves as they emerge to maintain the attractive appearance of the plant. Cordyline Torbay Red can be vulnerable to very low temperatures so it is worth providing additional mulch, insulating or moving indoors over the harshest months of winter.
