IMPORTANT NOTE: Grey willow has been trimmed to encourage healthy growth. If youd prefer a more upright form, select a central shoot and cut back any competing shoots as it begins to flourish.
A small willow with oval leaves that, when young, have a fine silver felt on the underside.
Growth and size
Mature height: 10m.
Growth rate: 60cm per year.
Supplied as 20-50cm cell-grown saplings.
Can be planted all year round with proper care.
Value to wildlife
Food plant of a number of moths, including sallow kitten, sallow clearwing, dusky clearwing and lunar hornet clearwing.
Food plant of the emperor butterfly.
Catkins are an early source of pollen and nectar for bees and other insects.
Birds feed on the caterpillars.
Soil and conditions
Grows in woodland and hedgerows.
Grows in damp areas, such as near canals, rivers and streams.
