Bring a touch of the tropics to your patio with this extraordinary ornamental banana that’s as tough as it is beautiful. The Golden Lotus Banana, also known as Musella lasiocarpa, can withstand the chill of UK gardens with some protection, thanks to its origins in the mountainous Yunnan region of China.
This compact beauty forms a sturdy, thick trunk and bold paddle-shaped leaves, making a striking feature in pots or borders. Once mature, it rewards with breathtaking golden-yellow flowers that can last up to six months – a real conversation starter!
This variety can be left in situ over winter, but should be wrapped in horticultural fleece, while those in containers should be overwintered in a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory, with water and feeding reduced.
After flowering, the main plant naturally dies back, but not to worry – it produces a generous clump of ‘pups’ at its base, each ready to grow on and take centre stage the following season. Its smaller size makes it ideal for patios and smaller spaces, and it’s equally happy in sun or part shade.
Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant out and grow on.
